The rest of the album is dominated by Barrett material, with a few more kiddie corkers like РІР‚СљThe GnomeРІР‚Сњ (РІР‚Сљa story about a little manРІР‚В¦ called Grimble GrombleРІР‚Сњ) and РІР‚СљBikeРІР‚Сњ (РІР‚СљI know a mouse, and he hasnРІР‚в„ўt got a house, I donРІР‚в„ўt know why I call him Gerald / HeРІР‚в„ўs getting rather old but heРІР‚в„ўs a good mouseРІР‚Сњ). Toc H.,РІР‚Сњ and side closer РІР‚СљTake Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk,РІР‚Сњ bass player Roger WatersРІР‚в„ў first solo writing credit on a Floyd record and a percussive popper.Р”Р‡lip over the record and The Floyd shift into РІР‚СљInterstellar Overdrive,РІР‚Сњ at once ascending and descending into space, a song that has since become a staple of alt-rock bands wanting to prove their Pink prowess. (The English believed a single shouldnРІР‚в„ўt also be on an album huh?) Following from there, РІР‚СљMatilda Mother,РІР‚Сњ РІР‚СљFlamingРІР‚Сњ (two nursery rhyme-esque Barrett tunes), РІР‚СљPow R.

Next comes a short one, РІР‚СљLucifer Sam,РІР‚Сњ about a Siam cat who is РІР‚Сљsomething I canРІР‚в„ўt explain.РІР‚Сњ Another descender but with much more of a pop hook, itРІР‚в„ўs the shouldРІР‚в„ўve-been single that wasnРІР‚в„ўt. (IРІР‚в„ўm going by all the things IРІР‚в„ўve read over the years РІР‚вЂњ I was only four in РІР‚в„ў67.) The album starts off with a lengthy almost-instrumental called РІР‚СљAstronomy DomineРІР‚Сњ (РІР‚СљJupiter and Saturn, Oberon Miranda and Titania / Neptune Titan, stars can frightenРІР‚В¦РІР‚Сњ), ascending to BarrettРІР‚в„ўs telecaster trickery and keyboardist Richard WrightРІР‚в„ўs imaginative meanderings.

Finally, that epochal original mono mix has been reissued on vinyl.Р”Р„ Record Store Day 2018 release, this limited edition puts Piper back into the dawn it was born in, when an experimental English band РІР‚вЂњ led by a mercurial guitarist named Syd Barrett РІР‚вЂњ played at the UFO Club amid projected light shows that really added to the goings-on, especially if you were tripping. Since stereo eventually became the de facto standard, the mono version eventually faded away and was never reissued, except as part of the 40th Anniversary 3CD box set from 2007 (see red image below). Like so many of the records issued in the mid РІР‚в„ў60s, it was put out in both mono and stereo versions. Just over fifty years ago, PINK FLOYDРІР‚в„ўs debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, was released.
